Is IS 2062 still current?
No, it has been replaced. IS 2062 has been replaced by IS 2062 (Part 1):2025 (MechAtlas review: 23 October 2026). Use the replacement for new work, and check differences before interchanging parts.
What it covers
Indian specification for hot-rolled medium and high tensile structural steel.
IS 2062:2011 is withdrawn. Part 1 (2025) covers hot-rolled medium and high tensile structural steel; Part 2 (2026) covers quenched and tempered steel.

“Similar” never means interchangeable without an engineering check.
Parts that use IS 2062
- I-beam (taper flange) (India (IS), material)
Hot-rolled I-shaped beam with sloping (taper) inner flange faces, used for general frames, supports and runway beams.
Grades: E250 / E350 etc.
Steel grade for the section. - Wide-flange / parallel flange H-beam (India (IS), material)
Hot-rolled I or H section with parallel flange faces, used for columns, main beams, crane girders and pipe racks.
Grades: E250 / E350 etc. - Channel (C / U section) (India (IS), material)
Hot-rolled U-shaped section used for frames, purlins, bracing, conveyor stringers and platforms.
Grades: E250 / E350 etc. - Equal and unequal angle (India (IS), material)
Hot-rolled L-shaped section used for bracing, frames, supports, cleats and edge protection.
Grades: E250 / E350 etc. - Steel plate (India (IS), material)
Flat hot-rolled steel 3 mm and thicker, used for base plates, gussets, liners, chutes and fabricated parts.
Grades: E250 / E350 etc.
Now IS 2062 (Part 1):2025. - Flat bar (India (IS), material)
Hot-rolled rectangular bar used for brackets, stiffeners, wear strips, frames and fabrication.
Grades: E250 / E350 etc. - Round bar (hot rolled and bright) (India (IS), material)
Solid round steel bar, hot rolled or bright (drawn, turned, ground), used for shafts, pins, studs and machined parts.
Grades: E250 etc.
Structural grade; machine parts often use other IS grades. - Structural steel grade (India (IS), main)
The material grade for structural sections and plates, which sets strength, toughness and weldability.
E250 BR (example)
Grades: 11 grades in Part 1, incl. new E235 and E500
Part 1:2025 replaces IS 2062:2011.
